Garden Care
Potted plant and garden plant care (Pruning)
Pruning refers to methods of care such as cutting branches and twigs off of trees, adjusting the shape and size, and improving the ventilation of the plants. Pruning doesn’t just make the appearance better, it has effects such as stopping the breeding of pests such as caterpillars, stops bees and wasps from making nests through good ventilation, and also allows for better use of nutrients for promoting further growth.
Some people say that “trees are best left natural”, however that is only in a wild state. When we are talking about a garden with limited space, having a garden tree left uncontrolled can cause several problems.
In order for garden tree branches to grow better and healthier, frequent care is needed. The condition of trees changes according to the changing of the seasons meaning there is an appropriate time for pruning according to the type of tree. Getting this time period wrong can result in a number of negative effects such as when the buds of a flowering tree are cut meaning flowers cannot bloom and cannot bear fruit. In the worst scenario the tree may wither and die.
Leaving a tree for many years uncared for can result in exponential horizontal and vertical growth making for a jungle like appearance which is ill-shaped and hard to fix. Meaning the tree can no longer be made to a reasonable size, and in the worst case may need to be cut down. Trees whose branches have grown as high as the roof of the house drop leaves which can block the rain gutter too. Also, trees that have grown into the next door neighbours’ house can drop leaves into swimming pools and other unwanted areas which can cause conflicts.
In conclusion, after thinking about a tree’s appearance, health and keeping a good relationship with your neighbours, regular management is essential. We, at Zen Gardening Services will help tailor your tree and its width and height according to what is best for the tree and you. In addition, with regular pruning we can quickly find any pests and maintain the health of your tree and improve the sunlight exposure in your garden as a whole.
Hedge trimming
Unlike pruning where each branch is one by one cut to shape, trimming involves cutting the leaves with garden shears or a machine and tailoring it into a variety of different shapes such as steps, scattered patterns, spherical and hemispherical shapes, standard style, corners, cylindrical and cone shapes just to name a few. Regular trimming allows the leaves to cluster together for a better look, however some trees are and some not suited to trimming. Trees that don’t sprout well, or have large leaves tend to not be suited for trimming so please contact us for more information. However, trimming alone can mean that the branches inside don’t get enough sunlight effecting growth and making leaves wither, as well as being a cause for pests, so we recommend that you do some form of pruning at least once every 2 years in order to get rid of dead and unneeded branches inside.

Garden trees almost always have bugs/insects on them and from time to time can get insect/tree disease.
