About Zen Gardening
About Director Keisuke Ishibashi (Kei)
The first time I came to Australia was after I pulled out of high school and stayed for a month when I was 17 years old where I started surfing after being introduced by an acquaintance. I fell in love with the sea and nature here in Australia and after saving money working in Japan, I came again when I was 19 years old on a working holiday visa and also stayed a further 2 and half years on a student visa. After that, I went on to work at factories, do carpentry and civil engineering work whilst frequenting Australia, as well as enjoying surfing in California, Hawaii and Chiba in Japan. It was during this period that I started taking care of my friend’s garden in Australia.
Studying at TAFE, captivated by Australia
When I was 27, I started thinking I need to choose where I want to be, and that is when I seriously started thinking about permanent residency here in Australia. The year after that I got my secondary school education certificate in Japan and then decided to start a carpentry course at TAFE here in Australia. I had previously worked for a year at a different company doing gardening, and although at first I didn’t really enjoy it, after handling all different types of plants, seeing the different colours of flowers, their smell, beautiful turfs, and seeing the charm of a variety of different trees, and not to mention the smiles of my customers after I’d done a good job, I soon started to love gardening.
Purchasing my own business and becoming Independent
The boss at my old company was often tardy, out of touch and most of the time not ready for work in the morning, so I decided to become independent and do my own gardening business and started Zen Gardening Services in 2011 after buying a business I saw in a newspaper advertisement. After that, I spent my time reading gardening books, going to gardening shows, and gaining knowledge from fellow gardeners. In addition, I used my experience in Japan in carpentry and civil engineering whilst occasionally learning a thing or two from my clients, to further build on my experience and expand my business.
